I am an english man living in Germany who comes to Finland every year for summer holidays.I shoot at the moment a reflex musky compound for bow fishing and target practice.I know that i have spotted rabbits/hares, wolverine?, and another dog like animal around the area can i shoot these animals or anything else on the private land that i have without a licence or permission. And bow fishing can i only shoot around the lake of my summer house or is it possible to go to shallow waters near other summer houses….I know how you finns like your privacy so just wondering if this is acceptable.

Hi Dave.

A good, brief summary about hunting in Finland can be found from http://www.riista.fi/riistafi/riistaen/ and “bow & arrow specfic” summary from http://www.jousimetsastys.fi/w…..sociation/

EDITED: First of all, you need to have a valid hunting card from your own country. Using that, you can apply for Finnish hunting card and pay annual fee. Or, alternatively, pass the Finnish exam (in Finnish or Swedish language).

Secondly, you need to have a permit from the land owner to hunt anything on his/her land. Some landowners rent the hunting rights of the area to hunting clubs, but may reserve rights to sell some amount of permits himself/herself. In any case, you need the permit from someone who owns the hunting permits at that moment.

When it comes to spieces to be hunted & legal hunting dates, please familiarize yourself with the list on page http://www.teho.net/mkj/store/Season.htm and the rightmost column (’B’ indicates an animal you’re allowed to hunt with bow & arrow).

For bowfishing you don’t need hunting card, but always 1) permit from the owner of the water area and, 2) assuming you’re aged between 18 -64, also a state fishing license or “valtion kalastuksenhoitomaksu” (20 eur/year).

Don’t hesitate to ask more…
