Hi, I am an American bowhunter who has recently been invited to hunt at friends’ property in Finland. I just started to familiarize myself with the Finnish hunting regulations and read that a firearms shooting test is required for the hunt card. I do not intend to hunt with firearms at all and prefer not to travel with one if the intention is only bowhunting.
It is unclear to me if everybody has to take the firearm shooting test.
Thank you,
Sian

Hi, Sian. Please familiarize youself with our info on page in English, https://www.jousimetsastys.fi/wp/english/

It contains also a link to an English language document (PDF) about Hunting in Finland in general, provided by Finnish Wildlife Agency.

Currently you don’t need a shooting test if hunting with bow, but you’re also limited to small game (incl. roe deer and beaver). In other words, we’re not allowed to hunt f.ex. whitetail deer, moose or bear with bow and arrow in Finland. Yet, that is…

Regards, Ari

Thank you for your prompt reply!! Yes I was reading exactly that page you gave me the link of. That is how I got into this forum. The PDF file was not entirely clear to me hence my question.
My plan is to only hunt roe deer. I did understand that it is (still) illegal to bowhunt whitetail, moose and bear in your country. I also heard that a crew of American Whitetail visited Finland to work with your authorities so maybe in a few years you’ll be hunting whitetails with bow and arrow too…. 🙂
Thanks again!
